Important Disclaimer: The experiences and recommendations shared in this guide reflect my personal visits and those of the Celiac Safe Travel community at a specific point in time. Restaurant menus, staff training, ownership, and food handling procedures change. Always verify celiac safety protocols directly with each establishment before ordering. This guide is not a guarantee of safety and should not replace your own due diligence. Trust your instincts β€” if something doesn't feel right, don't eat it.

One of the Best Islands for Celiac Travelers

Let me say this clearly: Maui is one of the most celiac-friendly destinations I have ever visited. As a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and a person with celiac disease, I do not say that lightly.

The food culture in Maui is genuinely allergy-aware in a way that is rare even in major U.S. cities. Staff at many restaurants use the language "celiac safe" rather than just "gluten free." They understand cross-contamination. They change gloves. They ask questions.

We stayed in Kihei, which I highly recommend as a base. It's local, walkable, less resort-heavy than Wailea, and packed with excellent food options. We also explored the Road to Hana β€” which has its own hidden gems worth planning around.

Here is everything I wish I had known before I went.

My Personal Celiac-Safe Picks

All restaurants below were visited personally. Experiences reflect a specific visit β€” always verify current protocols before dining.

Miss Arepa

πŸ“ Lahaina Β· Worth the drive from Kihei
100% Dedicated GF

Miss Arepa is the crown jewel of celiac-safe dining on Maui. This Venezuelan restaurant is 100% gluten free β€” nothing on the menu contains gluten. No cross-contamination risk, no navigating a shared kitchen, no anxiety. Just pure joy.

What I ordered: The PabellΓ³n Arepa β€” shredded beef, black beans, sweet plantains, and white cheese tucked inside a perfectly crispy corn arepa. Outstanding.

Also highly recommended: yuca fries, beef empanadas, and the PatacΓ³n sandwich. The owners are a young Venezuelan couple who built something truly special.

VerdictAs safe as it gets. If you only eat at one restaurant on Maui, make it this one.

Nalu's South Shore Grill

πŸ“ South Kihei
Highly Recommended

Nalu's quickly became one of our favorite spots in Kihei. The vibe is quintessential Maui β€” open air, casual, with chickens literally wandering the outdoor space. It is charming in the most unexpected way.

What made us feel truly comfortable was the staff. The person taking our order was impressively knowledgeable about celiac disease β€” not just gluten free, but the real clinical concerns. We felt genuinely safe ordering here.

VerdictHighly recommended. Staff knowledge made a real difference in our comfort level. The resident chickens make it unforgettable.
🍧

Peace Love & Shave Ice

πŸ“ Right outside Nalu's Β· Kihei
Safe Treat

Conveniently located right outside Nalu's, this makes a perfect dessert stop after dinner. Shave ice is naturally gluten free β€” we found this to be a safe treat and enjoyed it without any issues.

VerdictA great after-dinner stop. Ask about syrup ingredients if you are highly sensitive.
🐟

Tobi's Poke

πŸ“ Kihei
Highly Recommended

Tobi's exceeded our expectations. The staff were exceptionally knowledgeable and confirmed a separate preparation area for our gluten-free orders β€” both of them. That level of care is rare at a casual poke spot.

Note: GF options are somewhat limited since many poke marinades contain soy sauce. What was available was excellent and handled with real care.
VerdictHighly recommended. Ask about current GF options on arrival as they can vary.

Cool Cats Cafe

πŸ“ Kihei
Good Option

Cool Cats is a fun, retro-themed burger restaurant and one of the more approachable casual dining spots in Kihei for celiac travelers. The standout feature: they have a dedicated fryer for fries β€” a non-negotiable for many of us.

Important: Fryer protocols and cross-contact procedures can change with staff turnover. Always confirm current practices when you arrive β€” do not assume based on a past visit or any guide, including this one.
VerdictA solid casual option, especially for families. Always verify fryer and prep protocols on arrival.
🌴

Coconuts Fish Cafe

πŸ“ Multiple Kihei locations
GF Friendly

A Maui institution for fresh fish, with safe options for celiac travelers. We ordered the Mahi-mahi plate with coconut rice and mango salsa β€” fresh, clean, and delicious.

Staff are generally familiar with gluten-free requests. Rice bowls and taco plates can often be modified, and fresh grilled fish is a natural fit for a GF diet.

VerdictA reliable option. Communicate your celiac diagnosis clearly and confirm modifications before ordering.
πŸ₯

The Cinnamon Roll Place

πŸ“ Kihei
Baked Goods

A must-stop for anyone who has missed baked goods since their celiac diagnosis. We got the gluten-free cinnamon rolls and banana bread β€” both were really good. Go early for the best selection.

VerdictA wonderful treat. Confirm preparation protocols on arrival regarding shared baking surfaces.

πŸ›£οΈ Road to Hana: Celiac Highlights

The Road to Hana is one of the most spectacular drives in the world β€” and it's surprisingly navigable for celiac travelers if you plan ahead.

πŸ•

Hana Farms

πŸ“ Hana
Highly Recommended

Hana Farms was a genuine highlight of our entire trip. Set in a lush garden-like setting, this farm stand serves wood-fired pizza β€” including GF options that are genuinely worth stopping for.

We ordered: The Maka'alae Pie and the Wild Tomato Margherita. Both were excellent β€” the Maka'alae Pie was by far our favorite. Seek it out specifically.
VerdictA highlight of the entire trip. Confirm GF preparation when ordering.
β˜€οΈ

The Magic Oven

πŸ“ On the Road to Hana
Morning Stop

We stopped here in the morning and were pleasantly surprised. GF açaí bowls with gluten-free granola — a perfect, energizing start before a long day of driving and hiking. They also offer GF pizza and other options.

VerdictA great morning stop. Solid GF options and a relaxed, welcoming vibe.
πŸ₯₯

Coconut Glen's

πŸ“ Road to Hana β€” watch for the signs
Owner is GF

Legendary on Maui for a reason. This roadside stand serves extraordinary coconut-based ice cream in creative tropical flavors β€” and the owner is gluten free themselves. That gave us immediate comfort and the ice cream was, frankly, incredible.

VerdictAn absolute must-stop. One of the most memorable food experiences on the entire trip.

Kihei Airbnb + Instacart Strategy

We stayed in a Kihei Airbnb with a full kitchen β€” my top recommendation for any celiac traveler. Having your own kitchen removes the anxiety of every single meal and saves money. We used Instacart to stock the kitchen on arrival, ordering from:

πŸ›’

Costco Maui

Bulk GF snacks, proteins, fresh fruit, and basics

🌺

Hawaiian Moons

Local natural foods store β€” beloved by the GF community

πŸͺ

Foodland

Local Hawaiian chain with solid GF selections

πŸ›οΈ

Safeway

Reliable and well-stocked with familiar GF brands

Pro tip: Place your Instacart order before you land so groceries arrive shortly after check-in. Nothing worse than arriving hungry with nothing safe to eat.

Celiac Travel Tips for Maui

01

Pack your emergency kit

Even in celiac-friendly Maui, always travel with GF snacks, enzyme supplements, electrolytes, and anti-nausea medication. The Road to Hana has very limited food options.

02

Book an Airbnb with a kitchen

This single decision reduces your risk dramatically and gives you a safe home base. Kihei has excellent options close to restaurants and beaches.

03

Use Instacart on arrival

Order groceries before you land. It's a game-changer for starting your trip safely without scrambling hungry after a long travel day.

04

Maui staff speak "celiac"

Staff at many restaurants use the word "celiac" rather than just "gluten free." Say the word. It signals the seriousness and typically gets the right response.

05

Plan the Road to Hana

Know your food stops before you leave. Options are very limited once you're on the road. Hana Farms, Magic Oven, and Coconut Glen's are your anchors.

06

Always verify in person

No guide β€” including this one β€” can guarantee your safety. Menus change, staff turn over. Your best protection is always asking the right questions yourself.
